Indeed, I've been looking for an old carbon microphone to try
collector/drain modulating my little rig. AM would work much better
with the super-regen detector than the current WBFM.

AM modulation into the collector circuit from a passive microphone would
only be practical at very low oscillator powers, as the microphone would
need to provide all the sideband power.

I use an electret microphone at the moment to achieve WBFM which is
essentially cheating for a true one active device phone transceiver.
If you don't mind another device it is easy to AM modulate the
oscillator. You could probably base-modulate your current rig, but I am
unsure how much modulation depth would be available. FM by comparison
is easy as the carrier power is just spread out by the modulation, not
added to it which requires significant AF power gain, especially at
high carrier powers.

Something Michael and I have talked around is using a magnetic amplifier
to achieve direct modulation of the RF. Also parametric modulation by
varactors which needs little power.

Another way to achieve WBFM is simply to couple the microphone diaphram
directly to the tank coil. I've played with this briefly and it works
fairly well. I noticed the latest SPRAT mentions the same idea by
gluing a polymer disk to the coil. Can't remember the author sorry...

And what does that matter? Overtone frequencies are not integral
multiples of the fundamental regardless of the cut, and 1.007 is still not

You yourself have claimed more than once that since fn is approimately
equal to nfo we can make it exactly equal to nfo so that r'=n and therefore
ln is exactly equal to lo in all cases. Most, if not all of us have been
showing otherwise.

The only thing I've ever noticed between the two is that the CA3046 is
better spec'ed for small signal NF performance and differential pair
matching. The CA3086 seems to be better suited for power applications as it
has a lower thermal resistance yet the same maximum dissipation and
temperature range.

If you look at their magnitude and if I didn't make an error, then this
resistors are irrelevant.

They are left over from the former (proposed faster) circuit after
findinf the 100 ohms problem to discuss.

I really miss those CA3000 series transistor arrays. Best thing that
ever happened to discrete component designers. Some are still available in
SOIC form, and I hold on to my stock of DIP versions for dear life.

Let us know how your version of the X-Môde mixer works out, good or bad.
The more data from more builders the better.

I'm pounding away at a passive (diode) version of the H-Môde mixer. I
tried this many years ago, and after the success with the X-Môde mixer I
thought I'd give it another try. Tested it this morning with better diodes
and it's just as lousy as before. But, if I add a fourth transformer I
think I can remedy the problem.

I both like and dislike the H-Môde mixer. It has a frequency limitation
due entirely to the FETs, but the fact that their sources are all grounded
is attractive. Making it with diodes will take care of the frequency
limitation.

What if the H-Moder mixer is realized with JFETs like J309 ? They are
very fast. It is clear that the maximum load should then be reduced. But
more frequency less IP3 is required.

Another way is to test the Potato Semi multiplexers.

I'm interested to get a couple of the 74G74 and one of the multiplexers
if their is a group buy.

Diodes, being two-terminal devices, MUST have LO and signal both flowing

The X-Môde mixer has a virtual ground for the LO and IF signals at the
diode common cathode connections, and this may be why the X-Môde mixer has
far better IMD performance than the diode ring mixer. The question now
remains as to what effect grounding the diode cathodes will have. I'll know
before the day is over.

I'm a litte amused that the multi-billion military and space industry
doesn't already cleared all reasonable questions one simple man can ask
regarding mixers.

On the other side I'm sure Chris knows most of the important papers.

Maybe the frequencies are too low?

That didn't take long. I worked up a synthesis for a diode mixer
yesterday having all the diode cathodes grounded, then modified my earlier
passive H-Môde prototype to add a fourth transformer. Performance is
better, but the OIP3 is more than 10dB lower than for the X-Môde mixer with
the same diodes.

It's not at all useless. Just another bad example.

Your enthusiasm betrays you. It's not the diode version of the H-Môde
mixer that gets the better conversion loss, it's my own configuration of
splitting up the ring of the diode ring mixer that does. As I stated very
clearly in that paper, that the H-Môde diode mixer does not perform any
better than the diode ring mixer, which has been consistent with all of the
testing I have done with H-Môde mixers to date. All in all, the H-Môde
mixer does not perform any better than the diode ring mixer.

We've had this argument a few times in the past, and I will restate it
here so that there is no misunderstanding: An H-Môde mixer made with the
exact same parts as a diode ring mixer, be it diodes or MOSFETs as the
switching devices, does not perform any differently than the diode ring or
FET ring mixer. It does not surprise me in the least that those of you who
have promoted the H-Môde mixer have never performed or published an
apples-vs-apples comparison of your own. I have, and the results have
always been clearly stated.

My mixer, which is described in detil in that paper, bears no
resemblance whatsoever to any form of the H-Môde mixer, and I would much
prefer that you not make use of my work in an effort to promote the H-Môde
mixer. My work, as described in that paper, is none other than my own.

Yes, that's pretty much what is taking place. I've been working on a
theory section to add to the paper so as to show in detail why there is such
a significant difference in conversion loss performance.

Basically, at any given time one end of the T3 secondary is shunted to
ground by a parallel pair of diodes, while the other end of the secondary
sees a load of two package capacitances (Cp in Fig. 4) plus a balanced pair
of leakage inductances of the T1 (or T2) secondary to ground. Since there
is a pair of Cp plus the T2 (or T1) leakage inductances to ground at both
ends of the secondary at all times, those parasitic capacitances and
inductances are pretty much balanced out and you're left with the remaining
four incremental components of the two diodes in parallel. I'll have the
details of all this worked out before long.

The MOSFET H-mode mixer topology is basically different from ANY diode
mixer. The sources are grounded and the gate-source potential is
unaffected by the signals. There is NO diode equivalent of the H-mode
mixer's topology, it requires a three terminal device.

In ANY topology diode mixers MUST have both signal and LO flowing
together in the diodes. The switching instant will ALWAYS occur due to
the sum of the signal(s) and LO.

Yes, diode mixers work to frequencies far above what can be done with
bus switch ICs. I have a plastic drawer with MCL diode mixers when I
want a VHF/UHF mixer. And when I need higher intercept at VHF I'll and
be looking at your arrangement to try to do better.

But for HF use H-mode can't be beat. H-mode is not just a lot of bang
for the buck (IE, easy to build and works well), it gets within 1 dB of
the theoretical conversion loss (3.92 dB) of a perfect commutation
mixer.

So go ahead and pitch your mixer, I have no problem with that.
But panning the H-mode is pointless: for HF the H-mode really IS better.

According to all the testing I've done, the H-Mode mixer is not much
different from a ring mixer (diode or FET) made with the exact same parts.

You really have to ask yourself why the promoters of the H-Mode mixer
have never accomplished and published a direct comparison of their own,
using the exact same parts for both circuits. I did it three or more years
ago and found very little difference if any.

Now that I've had time to sort out the theory details, I was reminded of
some additional testing that I did when I first came up with the split-ring
mixer. There's very little difference between how this and a diode-ring
mixer operate. In both cases, one pair of diodes is turned "on" and the
other pair "off". The "on" pair shorts one end of the RF/IF transformer
secondary to ground while the other end is left open. What is different
between these two is that the LO source impedance seen by the diodes is
200-ohms for the split-ring mixer while for the diode-ring mixer it's
100-ohms. I did an additional test back then, replacing the T1 and T2 1:4
baluns with 1:1 baluns, so that the diodes would see a 50-ohm LO source
impedance. When I did that, the conversion loss was approximately that of
the diode-ring mixer.

When I was designing mixers for microwave frequencies, there was always
the issue of matching the diodes to the power splitter/combiner. It was
quite different when using branchline couplers as the diode ports were
50-ohms and you had to add a short length of high-impedance line plus a
small matching stub to get the correct conjugate match. Manufacturers data
sheets don't give you much to work with in terms of conversion loss vs. LO
source impedance. HP did way back then, but even then we would measure them
with a VNA, which was a bit tricky due to the power levels needed. If you
weren't careful you could easily burn out the harmonic converter.

I will have to investigate this further so as to determine the best LO
source resistance, and I might be able to do that by way of adding simple
autotransformers to the LO port rather than having to deal with bizarre
turns ratios for T1 and T2. Given the fact that the conversion loss is
close to the theoretical minimum, it may turn out that this configuration
may not be ideal but it is practical and easily reproduced.

Hmmmm... I'm looking at it with Acrobat 3.0, Acrobat 6.0, and Foxit

If you look at fig 6 in my article you have an amplifier with two power splitters. I could not make it stable so I dropped one. I retained the power splitter at the input because by making the power splitter asymmetric, I gain both a defined input impedance and low noise.

In your input splitter, the two input voltages are of opposite polarity,
which means that power is being dissipated by the isolation resistor, and
there are also losses in the transformer core due to the generation of flux
caused by the voltages being of opposite polarity. This form of power
splitter has outputs with equal phase and magnitude when the loads are equal
and signal is applied to the common terminal.

To prevent losses and excess noise, both inputs should be of equal
magnitude and phase so that there is no loss in the isolation resistor and
no generation of flux in the transformer core. I solved this part of the
problem I was having with your circuit by moving the splitter to the output.
Now, I'm seeing reverse isolation in PSpice of 50dB or more. In your
circuit you left out the termination resistor of the common port, which
degrades the isolation considerably.

Yes, I understood that when I first saw it, but the output return loss
is less than 1dB, which makes it almost impossible to use with a passive
filter, which requires good terminations at both ends, particular narrow
bandwidth bandpass filters and high- or lowpass filter with sharp transition
characteristics.

Another item was the lack of a proper termination resistor at the
splitter output terminal. I found that without it you lose almost 20dB of
reverse isolation and about 12dB of return loss in the study case that I
use.

I've been going back and forth between these two designs (yours and
mine), hoping to find some inspiration for eliminating the series and shunt
feedback resistors in my design. Using a transformer at both ends does not
help as the connection between them is floating.

I added the needed termination resistors to your Fig. 6, and I see much
better RL and isolation than I do without them, same as in the other cases.
Those resistors make power supply decoupling very simple, and I see almost
no variation in the phase margin between having them or not. Adding the
resistor between the splitters upsets the gain some. Since you said they
were needed for stability reasons, could you also attain that stability with
a ferrite bead at the base or collector of the transistor? Also, adding the
needed termination resistors may accomplish the same thing.

In using what I've modeled these past couple of days, my inclination
would be to use your Fig 6 for NF performance as any of those require two
transformers and you might as well get the best performance for the buck,
though I still have concerns about having inputs of opposite phase. For
oscillator followers or applications where NF is not a serious issue, I
would probably use mine as it only requires a single transformer.

If I were to do that, then I would not be making a valid side-by-side
comparison. Removing the splitter termination resistor(s) degrades the
isolation and the return losses. I added them so as to obtain the best
possible performance and to make a comparison where all three had been
optimized. Adding that 33-ohm resistor at the output decreases the gain by
4.3dB, which has quite an impact on the NF. The output noise level
decreases, but mostly because it's being attenuated by the added resistor.

If I take your single-transformer design, add the 33-ohm output
resistor, add the 130-ohm feedback resistor, change the transformer to 1:2,
change the isolation resistor to 150-ohms, and eliminate the termination
resistor, I get the following:

Gain (10MHz) 20.1dB
Isolation -40.7dB
Input Return Loss -7.7dB
Output Return Loss -20.7dB
Output Noise (10MHz) 11.59nV
3dB Cutoff 28.5MHz

If I simply add the termination resistor (45.5 ohms), I get:

Gain (10MHz) 19.2dB
Isolation -45.7dB
Input Return Loss -6.6dB
Output Return Loss -27.9dB
Output Noise (10MHz) 15.41nV
3dB Cutoff 26.6MHz

Perhaps I should add these two variations to that document.

The calculation of NF from output voltage is:

NF=10*Log(((VnAmpOut/Gamp)/VnThermalNoise)^2)

VnThermalNoise on 50Ohm at 300 degrees Kelvin is 0.91 nV/Sqrt(Hz)

For you 3 amplifier simulations:

1) G=-0.5dB VnAmpOut=2.051 nV/Sqrt(Hz) --> NF=7.06dB
2) G=-0.2dB VnAmpOut=2.878 nV/Sqrt(Hz) --> NF=10.2dB

That was for an amplifier with 12dB of gain using an MRF586 transistor, which is not a valid comparison to amplifiers having 0dB of gain using 2N2222 transistors. When making comparisons such as this, you use the same transistor in all cases operating at the same bias conditions. If I change the gain of my amplifier to 6dB, the NF drops to 3.85dB, and it will continue to drop as I increase the gain.

Now there's the matter if IMD performance. In case #1, your single transformer design, you added a 33-ohm resistor at the output to compensate for the very low output impedance of the amplifier proper. That resistor corrects the output RL problem, but it also acts as a 4dB attenuator, which increases the NF and reduces both the gain and the IP3 performance. In cases #2 (your 2-transformer design) and #3 (my design) there is no output transistor, so the NF, gain, and IP3 are not adversely impacted.

Description : Villard cage vhf direction finding apparatus. A shielded dipole with the receiver mounted INSIDE the shield. Provides extremely deep nulls off the end, perfect for locating the source of a signal. Note the dipole inside the cage is suspended at the ends with fishing-line insulators. The dipole does not have to be resonant- it will work fairly well across a wide (100 MHz?) bandwidth. The device shown was used to accurately locate a bad insulator on a power pole that was generating tons of RF at HF. A VHF harmonic of such noise is much easier to pinpoint. The Villard cage ("Cage" herein) offers such a sharp and deep null off the ends that it is possible to identify which crossarm on the pole has the problem; it is even possible to identify which side of the crossarm has the problem. The Cage is constructed with bare copper wire stiff enough to be self-supporting. Four long wires are arranged in a square (when viewed down the axis of the dipole), and the ends of the cage wires are bent into a taper and soldered together. At some arbitrary positions along the length of the cage install a wire "Square" which matches the cross-section of the Cage, and solder the wire Square to the cage wires. The Square dimensions and placement are NOT critical, and is mostly for physical support, and partially for current balance. The Cage apparatus is ideal for accurately locating the source of any VHF signal. I used a cheap Radio Shack Aircraft AM receiver; any receiver will do. The important part is EVERYTHING MUST BE PHYSICALLY WITHIN THE CAGE- NO WIRES MAY ENTER OR EXIT THE CAGE. The example shown in this picture has been malformed a bit from careless storage over the years. I suspect it
would work perfectly well just the way it is shown. A little more tension on the dipole would be nice to make it more straight. Have fun. KM6SN

Nice "proof of concept" work on Adrian's proposal. It does look like a viable approach.

You noted "real problems with harmonics" at the bottom end of the output range. I wonder if that might be reduced by applying the square wave to the mixer's LO port and taking output from the IF port. The IF port should work better at low frequencies.

I assume you used the Q-BIT amp because of its reasonable input/output match rather than because gain was needed. Those amps have very good specs but I wonder if it contributed to the harmonic content of the output. Some more gain and an AGC loop to level the output and this looks pretty useful.

Very nice results you got there! It looks pretty good, even better than I expected. As for the 100Mhz leak-through signal, what about we move both oscillators up 50Mhz? As in having the Si570 tune from 150.1Mhz to 250MHz and have the other fixed oscillator run at 150MHz? It should clear things up a bit I reckon. It would be interesting to make the changes and compare the results if you have the posibility.

Awesome, John! I can almost see it coming together. Now we just need more gain which we might obtain say with a monolithic amp (and an AGC). I'm curious how much will the signal increase compared to the background noise. If that becomes a problem, I suppose we can further filter with a switchable bandpass filter.

Be aware thad crystal with smaller size has fewer shifts.
Crystals with the specified 30 pF capacitor found to be the best shift.


Modern SMD crystals specified for 12-15 pF has less shift I found.

A choke in series with the Crystal and capacitor shift the frequency a little above the specified frequency and the capacitor tuned them lower.

It is legitimate.  Yahoo owns that domain.  Yahoo!Groups always use it to "serve" files to us from their servers.

When you click on any file from any Yahoo!Group, Yahoo's servers give it to you using a temporary (very long) URL that always begins with xa.yimg.com.  They've been doing this for at least the last several years.

FYI, the paper I just downloaded from Yahoo's [emrfd] website is identical to my download yesterday from IEEE.  So nothing nefarious got attached to the file by Yahoo or someone else.

I think your security software just got a little too paranoid about the URL.  These days it's hard to keep up, playing the leapfrog game.

Yahoo!Groups are fairly popular, so there's a good chance your security software may eliminate those warnings before too long, once they realize it's normal and OK.

your recordings are indeed a music in my ears!This is a receiver I wanted to build for long time now and it is the first time I hear how it sounds. I had  a different expectation but not very far from that!

if it is not too much of a trouble , and you don't mind if I exploit a bit your excitement of making recordings, I would like to ask if possible for a recording in a normally busy band with more than one signals (but not contest crowded) but without tuning at all during the recording. If you could tune to a frequency where there are a few stations around and leave it there for 1 minute, I would like to hear how the signals spread around when you are not tuning and how easy is to make my brain "lock" in any one of them.This is something I always wanted to experience and one of the many reasons I would like to have a receiver like that!

I would greatly appreciate if you could provide a recording like that!

OK Nick - there was a "contest" of sorts (an FOC operating event), which had a lot of signals.  I parked the radio on one frequency so you could hear a lot of signals.  What sticks out to me is the ability to copy weak CW signals in the presence of loud signals.  No AGC plus a lot of dynamic range in the audio channel sure helps.

I'll try to make another recording with signals a little more spread out.  These FOC guys were really bunched up.

thanks for the recording! this is exactly what I was expecting from a binaural receiver!It is amazing how the signals are positioned and how you can focus on each one of them! It is true that copying a weaker signal when a stringer one appears "nearby" is much easier!
I think that the previous recordings (with the tuning) were masking this fantastic effect!
I guess that a similar effect is present on SSB although the signals may be overlapping due to their bandwidth!

There is a mind-blowing recording by LZ1AQ from his diversity reception experiments
http://lz1aq.signacor.com/docs/dr/ssb/2015-04-04%201740.mp3
in which -besides the signals moving around- they are also spread and almost separated!
I am wondering how close to that will be your receiver on SSB!
