I won this battery as a prize at a ham gathering this summer. The battery package contained the battery and a wall wart charger but no instruction sheet to give info on the initial charge- length of time to leave on the charger etc. and subsequent further charging to get maximum capacity and battery life. The model # is DC 1298A
input 12.6VDC output 12.6 - 10.8VDC 9800mAh.
I tried looking it up on the web but all I came up with was a number of places to buy them but no info sheet.Does anyone in the group know about these batteries and the proper way to charge the for best efficiency? Thanking you in advance for any help you may give.
Tnx es 73

Read this info:

http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/charging_lithium_ion_batteries

My synopsis:

Your battery sounds nice, three cells in series. Each cell has to be
charged individually. This is usually accomplished in laptops and model
helicopters by watching the voltage of each cell in the series
connection, and shunting the charging current around a cell when it
becomes fully changed. The charger shuts off when the last cell in the
series string reaches full charge.

Unlike NiCads, they are destroyed if you continue flow of charging
current past a full charge. DESTROYED. The charger has to be really
smart to monitor, control and terminate changing.

Lithium cells don't have memory, can be partially discharged then
recharged without loss of capacity. The last longer if kept well charged
and not letting them run down too low.

A search for a pre-built charger beyond just a wall wart would be worthwhile.  In addition to monitoring the voltage level of each cell during charging some thermal protection and current limiting should be provided both while charging and discharging.  Shorting Li-ions is dangerous business.

You have a FANTASTIC battery. Mine is for hobby helicopter, smaller than
yours but rated to put out 150 amps peak current. Never, ever use one
without some way to limit current.

Puncture one and your short becomes in the battery itself. I've taped
mine inside the cardboard box it was shipped in for mechanical/puncture
protection.

I didn't comment on your wall wart charger. With three cells there
damned well MUST be four wires between battery and charger so every cell
can be monitored independently. Personally, I would get a a TURNIGY
charger. About $25 it's a bargain: it will charge multi cell Lithium
(and other chemistries) safely and accurately.

Brad,

Cellpro is another well respected name in lithium battery chargers and is used by many RC Modelers.  I have an older Multi 4 model, it was inexpensive and does an excellent job at balancing the cells during the charging cycle. It automatcally charges all lithiums from single thru 4 cells.  (Usual disclaimers)

Good luck, just be sure to purchase a charger that balances each cell during charging.

C 1298A 12V 9800mAh Super Rechargeable Polymer Lithium-ion Battery for CCTV Camera Car

  • 100% brand new and high quality
  • Specially designed for the system devices which use 12V DC power
  • Super storage capacity
  • Over-charge / discharge protection

ITs built into the battery package hence two wires with different connectors.
You cannot use it with the usual 3S charger with equalization connectors.
  • With working indicator
  • Suitable for all 12V DC devices

Specification:

  • Battery type: Rechargeable Li-on battery
  • Capacity: 9800mAh
  • Input voltage: 12.6V
  • Output voltage: 12.6-10.8V

Thats the battery and the charge regulator is in the package.

I have the 4500mAH version and the charger has two leds, POWER and CHARGING,

and not much info.  I've used it and its same voltage with a cutoff at 10.8V and the

charger is automagic, as in plug it in and attach  to the charge connector of the

battery and the LED (green

This looks like a LiPo battery with the charger and balancer
built in and discharge limiter built in.

Whilst in the model world we fast charge LiPo, we have an
external charger and balancer - which requires two connections
to each cell, and the discharge limiter is built into the
external electronics.

I think this battery is intended to be used in conjunction
with equipment that has no internal discharge limiting.

I would use it as is, with the existing charger.
