I managed to get a lot more done in evaluating the KISS Mixer, and revised the earlier paper to include the results as well as add a PCB layout for the mixer plus the LO driver, which can be obtained from:

chris,

can the kiss mixer implemented using bipolars or discrete FETs as switches
present a similar performance? using standard npn transistors as switches
will be much easier for folks like us in india. i remember seeing a design
by rhode (or maybe sabin) that used bipolars as switches (probably an ARRL
handbook of 2005 or so).

Yes, it can, and it would probably be best to use some sort of MOSFET
such as the 2N7000 so that the resistance is as small as possible.

Hi Chris,

I was interested in taking a look at your paper

G'day Des.

Worked fine here in Firefox.

Click Tools at the top of the Firefox window then click Options then click the General tab and look at Downloads.

Yours is probably set to Save Files To Downloads Folder so Chris' document would have gone there (or to another folder if that's what's in the box.

I set mine to Show The Downloads Window etc, Close It etc and Always Ask Me Where To Save Files as I download files on many subjects, not just electronics.

PS. Thanks Chris for a very interesting paper.

Kerry.

Hi again Chris and the group,

Just a couple of lines to say "thanks" to all who responded with a copy of the pdf file and tips on how to avoid problems in the future when opening pdf files.

I have traced the problem to the pdf reader I use here (Sumatra-pdf) which is very lean & trim but it does sometimes fail to open some files from within the browser perhaps 10% of the time.

I am pleased to report that all the copies which I received via e-mail downloaded/opened without problem. I look forward to reading the rest of this very interesting document later this evening.

Thanks again and best wishes to all.

Des (M0AYF)

Thank you for the nice writeups and testing Chris,

It's really great to read.

In case you wanted to "mix it up" a bit more (har har) have you seen this design:

Maybe you could include that in your next test series for comparison?

Cheers and 73s,

Chris, your article has BAT-54S and also BAS-54 mentioned. Which is the correct diode used in your mixer?

Should have been BAT-54S. Where did you find BAS-54?

I see that I made that typo in a number of places.

Easy to do Chris !

The PICASTAR HF transceivers I have built, use the 'KISS' in the 2nd conversion, but use the FST3125 type devices. I might have a closer look at your paper and duplicate the KISS to play with sometime too.

Just another small point, Chris. Your KISS schematic at the end of the article, U1B is shown with pin 4 as input and 5 as output. It should be 3, 4. PCB is OK.

Can't believe I made all these typo errors. I'm usually much more
thorough than this.

BTW: Do you have a PDF of the schematic for the PICASTAR HF transceiver?
I'd like to see how they implemented the KISS mixer. I've had other
variations sent my way, but none are exactly the same.

Hi Chris,

There is a link at the top of my web page to full Sch (except pa's, lpf) for Picastar.

Okay, now I have it. Yes, that's pretty much it using the FST3125.
Nice to see someone using a pair of XOR gates to form the biphase LO instead
of the more typical flip-flop.

Not sure that squarer came from, but some work to improve it was done as shown here by M0RJD:-

Seems like an excessive amount of effort for such a simple task. Yes,
the earlier use of a flip-flop did give a good 1:1 mark to space ratio.
I'll look at this more thoroughly tomorrow when I have a faster connection.

7222 2012-01-31 15:00:51 glenn Re: KISS Mixer Update
Chris, the effort was initiated more becase of a lack of drive in the original design to the mixer at the higher bands. Marginal at best. Bob looked at the squarer and improved the sensitivity of the mixer and also increased the output level of the DDS based local oscillator.
