I am interested in external QSK setups for 100 watt transceivers and KW amplifiers. I have looked at some of the projects using vacuum relays and inexpensive relays, but they are kind of noisy. Has anyone done any work using PIN diodes in a QSK set up? Ameritron has a PIN diode QSK system, but it is a bit pricey for reasons I don't quite understand. Are the appropriate PIN diodes all that expensive? Any thoughts?

Joe,

I also would like to build an afterburner :) with full qsk. I studied the
specifications of various relays, and I found that they are not nerly as
fast (1-2msec?) to be able to make full qsk _and_ maintaining the correct
switching order:

Key down:

1. Receive OFF
2. PA OUT ON
3. PA IN ON
4. RIG KEY / PTT ON

Key up:

1. RIG KEY / PTT OFF
2. PA IN OFF
3. PA OUT OFF
4. Receive ON

there are good relays that could make it up to 30 WPM, but they are very
expensive.

A good solid state design would be very useful here too.
