I am resisting the temptation to jus throw any old AF amp in there.   I know Rick worked hard to come up with a quality AF amplifier circuit.  But the LM387 isn't around anymore.   Any suggestions for a replacement or equivalent IC?  Thanks, Bill N2CQR

Well the NE5532 is a low noise amp (a little better than the LM387 I think) and it’s used in many of the audio circuits in the EMRFD book.  It’s not pin compatible with the ‘387 though.

I use the MC33078 as in the audio pre-amp circuit of the UHFSDR.  Different pinout than the LM387, but is the standard dual op-amp 8 pin pinout.  The Softrocks use the LT6231.
