When my new laptop arrived with Ubuntu pre-installed, I found little reason to install Microsoft Windows. Almost everything worked, with better and more stable versions. However, I sorely miss the excellent utilities of the EMRFD CDs. The gpla and gplabuild are my most extensively used tools of trade in homebrewing. I guess that Spice simulations can replace them. But many of the niftier gems like the the cascade calculator that calculates the intermod and noise figure of all the cascaded blocks are some of the more interesting utilities that I miss.
Has anyone had any success running these under Wine? I would love to see some web versions of these programs written in javascript and html5 (but i am talking a new project here...)

I have successfully run the EMRFD utilities under Wine on Mac OS X and Linux. I didn't notice any functionality that I wasn't able to access, but I wasn't actually using them, just clicking around to find out how they worked.

Farhan,

If the programs won't run under wine, consider running XP (or some other flavor of Windoze) in a virtual machine using VMWare Player or Virtualbox. Both are free and both allow Windows guest OSes running under Linux.

Both work well. I use VMWare all the time to host Windoze and Linux OSes.

It's all very well saying run it under a virtual machine. I don't have a
XP, 7 or eight Disk to set up the virtual machine. I would have to
drink the wine to get them to run.

As you said maybe time to update to run on anything.

Cheers,
Will

I've used them under wine on ubuntu.  I've also run them on virtual machines.

In the end I looked around and found all the tools for Linux and then some.
Now its rare I resort to wine or virtual machine unless there is specific
functionality (MPLAB is one that fits that) or I need a legacy tool to reconstruct
some older work ( part of the job).

Thanks -- I second that  the ladpac apps run FB in VMWare Player

I have also used them under wine on fedora 64bit and they work fine.
They are very simple programs without any special requirements other than what WINE provides so it is not that possible to have problem running them.

Why would you think you could download it?

You need to purchase it!

i found it a little odd that the book doesn't mention or use many of the programs on the CD. for instance, the entire chapter on filters has no mention of the LADBUILD and GPLA programs. Nor does the chapter of transmitters and receivers mention the cascade.exe that is a life saver for those who build receivers in their minds.

there are some short notes with the cd. but i suppose some more examples would have gone a long way. as wes has said
