I'm thinking about purchasing an inexpensive LCR meter. One that caught my eye is:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/261256644309?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

Does anyone have any experience with this one, or could suggest something better?

I can't suggest anything better. but I can suggest something simpler. All
you need is a frequency counter.
Then, take a look at http://www.phonestack.com/farhan/testosc.gif
With standard value capacitors, the frequency output will depend upon the
inductance. Hence, you can back calculate the inductance. For measuring
capacitance, use measured inductance and parallel it with the unknown cap.
lather, rinse and repeat. This is what I do. It is quite accurate.

I was expecting a cheaper version of the AADE meter which would be fine,
although the real AADE is a sentimental favorite for me.

However when I look at the specs I see lower limits of 30 pF and 0.01 mH.
Both are too high for RF (HF) work. Although I do like the extended high
end ranges plus ESR.

I think most hams would want to go to 1 uF and 1 pF on the low end.

Dave:
From the listing, it looks like it only measures C. Many of us have
the AADE LCII and love them.

Oops, I meant 1 uH and 1 pF of course ...

Another case of buy it now or buy a bunch of cheap substitutes, then buy
it anyway later.

Get the AADE LCII and never have to consider this question again.

I had a cheapy LCR meter and it was not very accurate with low values. I
sold it on eBay and then purchased an AADE and am extremely happy with it.

In the latest issue of QRP Quarterly, Joe Everhart, N2CX, recommends this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/330855732011?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D330855732011%26_rdc%3D1

A manual for it is available at http://www.cwtd.org/Component_Test/ttester_eng106k.pdf

Joe does state, however, that as WA5BDU noted, it doesn't rely work all that well for caps below ~1000 pf or inductors smaller than ~1 uH (yes, I know the specs say 30 pf but this is what Joe reported experiencing.)

I bought this one on Ebay: 0.01pF to 100mF and 0.001µH to 100H. There is
two range on C meter, and also on L meter. I am satisfied with its
accuracy and the ranges.

* model:LC200A
* Supply power: +5v ,miniUSB interface,4pcs AA battery
* Measurement accuracy:1%
* Capacitance measuring range: 0.01 pF - 10uF
* The minimum resolution: 0.01 pF
* Big Capacitance measuring range1uF-100mF/minimum resolution:0.01UF
* Inductance measuring range: 0.001 uH - 100mH
* Big inductance measuring range: 0.001 mH - 100H
* The minimum resolution: 0.001uH
* Test frequency range: L/C about 500KHZ/Big inductance 500HZ
* Effective display digits: 4 digits
* LCD display mode: 1602

This meter and several others like it were discussed in _great_ length on the Heathkit Yahoo group.

Some original docs were made available in the Group files.

I also have the AADE LCII and the only thing that beats it its my
HP4191A Impedance analyzer... at much higher cost, longer setup,
and at least 80 pounds (weight!) heavier.

I've used the LCRII to sort a bin of mixed .5 to 10pf chip caps
with total confidence. Same with sub .5uh inductors.

All,

I second the AADE L/C IIB meter. Money well spent in my opinion. I use it all the time when homebrewing.

Hi Guys,

Greetings from across the pond. When I was first studying for my Ham exams,
back in the 90s, the first piece of test equipment I ever built was the
AADE LC meter kit. 20 or so years on it's still working. If the smoke ever
gets let out of it I'll surely get another. It is pretty accurate, very
simple to use, and has stood up to various types of abuse....and keeps on
going.
