Hi,

I've an unused signal generator.

A). Can I use it as a LO directly? Or
B). Do I need to do some modification?

Regards.

Yes you can use it as a local oscillator if the amplitude is suitable!
You should be OK with no modifications...

You may supply us with slightly more information though, will help you
to get the full answer faster :)

Yes, a modification is required, depending upon the stability of the unit. If it is synthesized, you are possibly ok, depending up

I have a video at http://golddredgervideo.com/kc0wox/bitxsmd/smdbitxrx.wmv where I'm testing a bitx20 receiver where I'm using a HP3325a functi

If it have the power level avaible, it may be an idea to put an external attenuator on the output. This should improve the return loss, an 6dB attenuator does wonders if the output return loss from the generator is not too good.

It may be an idea to measure the generator drift, if it is phase locked it should not drift but if it is an LC oscillator then the drift may be high.

No one looked up what that generator is..

That signal generator is a very high end synthesized unit with high stability and is programmable. Drift for that unit is measured in millihertz. I have the older cousin HP8656A in the lab and its a wonderful tool.

Just set it to the LO frequency you need, set the level to what you want. That one if memory serves goes to 15dbm output, 7DBM is enough for the bitx.

No mods needed.

Good luck that I still have an extra/unused Huff and Puff stabilizer. But anyway, I'm going to use the LO just for certain experiments purpose only i.e. I need to use it just for a short period of time and don't need it to be so stabilized but with a wide range of frequency of HF.
