i am loath to cross post, but there has been some interesting work by nick, measuring the phase noise of VFOs on the bitx list that might interest people here. here is the link: http://users.tpg.com.au/nfieraru/Electronics/RF_Oscillators/Phase%20Noise%20in%20RF%20Oscillators.htm he also did work on homebrew mixers which he has posted here http://users.tpg.com.au/nfieraru/Electronics/RF_Mixers/Double%20Balanced%20Mixers.htm the surprising result is with the germanium diodes. and that, the 1N4148s don't seem to do too badly either. - farhan
