Guyz,

I am having trouble drilling holes with my power drill ( 500 W)
through aluminium Hammond boxes . In the past I used tin boxes which
were easy but this time decied to make a professional prototype with
good aluminium boxes ( and mount SMA connectors ).

Do any of you have suggestions on the best way to do it ?

Let me know

thanks
Gopi

Gopi,

What do you mean having trouble. Aluminum is softer than tin. Please explain more. Thanks!

-Hi group. Aluminum chasis are easy to work with. Steel can be a chore
for magnetically shielded goodies. Good sharp drill bits should be the
rule. just a very light tap with a centerpunch will start the
point.Like other group member said: tapered bits, or in
America "Unitbit" are the way to drill straight, round holes in thin
aluminum. They are not cheap and should be cared for but will last a
long time and drill man many holes in many different sizes in one
tool. For very clean hole saw, or circle cutter hole (and even drill
bits) use aluminum cutting fluid that can be purchased in small, or
larger sized cans. In America try "Rapidtap Aluminum" the green
machine oil that will maked drill bits and cutting edges not rip and
cut a mirror bright surface. Have fun with your fancy bright aluminum
chasis, they are a cinch, 73's, Doug, KM6OR.-- In

I use the Harbor Freight step drills and get clean cuts with a
electric hand drill or drill press. A three piece set of step drills
are on sale right now
