Message Date From Subject 5784 2011-01-25 18:36:01 Ross Tucker off-topic question: where are the 50k audio pots with switches I can't seem to find 50k audio pots with switches on mouser. In fact,
when I select audio taper, there are _no_ pots with switches and when
I search for switched pots, there are no audio tapers! Considering
that a very common use of audio taper pots is audio controls, and that
it is common to put the main power switch on the volume pot, why can't
I find them here? Any suggestions?

Yes, there are exceptions to the above rule of thumb.
Personally I tend toward low impedances in solid state audio circuits (1K range) to reduce hum pickup, but with careful wiring the vacuum tube audio circuits often had impedances in the megohms and did OK.

check here:

a quick search turned up more than 90 audio taper pots at mouser.
hope this helps

The original question was pots with switches. That
very large listing you showed didn't show any with
switches.

Ross,
check here:

ago the switch and the pot are separate items
that snap together. Certain families of pots had
the ability to stack items, so you could put
several variable resistors and switches on the
same shaft, it cut back on inventory.

http://www.danscloseoutsandspecialdeals.com/dansspecialdeals.html
(look about a third of the way down the page...and check out his special offer: For orders of $75 or more he'll pay shipping and insurance if paid for by postal money order. He's been in business for years and I as well as many of the members of EMRFD I'm sure will vouch for his service. I'll bet there's not a single member who couldn't come up with $75 worth of goodies to order from him--OK maybe to wish for!)

throw away cameras, because I wanted some of the high voltage
electrolytic caps that are in them. When I was opening up one of the
cameras, I got a small shock!! Not enough to hurt me but it did get my
attention!! After that I was careful to use a 30 K resistor to
discharge all the caps.
This brings up the question that if we have young people helping us to
build things, that we need to work with them to keep them safe!!
Happy dumpster diving!

31XP405-F (in the listing Randy sent you, I think)
311-1903F-50K (Mouser's specs show it as 5K, clearly an error, but that's
why it's not in the search)
311-1204F-50K (same catalog page as 1903F, but may not be the shape you
want)
Also a couple of 100K audio pots with switches:
31CC501-F
31CB501F
If the parametric search doesn't work, I like to pick a product that's close
and browse the associated catalog page and its neighbors...

and 100K. It's likely they also have 50K.
The ones I have are from Alpha and were quite reasonably priced. The Mouser
PN for the 100K version is 31XP501-F and the MFG PN is
RV24A01F-10-15R1-A100K.
Those PNs should get you close to the part(s) you want, Ross.
