I need a very low profile IC socket for a project. After some digging around the lowest I can find is a socket that sits 0.11 inches (2.8mm) above the PCB surface but this may not be enough.

In the dim and distant past I seem to remember single pin IC sockets which fitted directly into a wider hole in the PCB. They arrived bandolered (is that the word) on strips designed for machine insertion and after fitting the IC sat a fraction of an inch above the PCB surface.

Does anyone remember these sockets and know of a source for them?

I used those a long time ago, I believe Advanced Interconnect made
them. A quick look at their website shows something similar, perhaps,
with their peel-away sockets.

Here's a suggestion:
I've used the individual contacts from "machined ic sockets" such as made by Augat and others which are not hard to find surplus. Here's a link to a picture of what I mean: http://www.sourceresearch.com/augat/image/800.jpg

The trick to maintaining a low profile is to carefully remove each machined contact from the socket using firm pressure applied from below or by clipping the plastic (or even ceramic!) from the side using fine sharp diagonal cutters. The holes in the PC board should be the same size as the holes in the plastic socket body and not standard pin sized. Yes, this method is tedious and requires more precision in PC fabricati

That's it, http://www.advanced.com/peelstart.html shows exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Take a plastic socket that has turned/machined individual sockets and carefully cut away the plastic.Solder each socket into your pcb.Only practical for one or two sockets ,gets a bit tedious otherwise.
