Some ham transceivers (I'm thinking back to 70's/80's era TenTec's in
particular) allowed you to listen to two frequencies simultaneously if
a second VFO was plugged in. Both frequencies had to be in the same
band.

I'm not talking about switching between two VFO's as done on
synthesized rigs. You could really listen to both frequencies at the
same time. And I'm pretty sure that it just took a second VFO, not a
whole second receiver.

Is this as simple as arithemtic addition of the two VFO's (presumably
very similar levels) going into the mixer? How closely matched do the
VFO levels have to be?
