I followed the discussions in QST and EMRFD about homemade spectrum
analyzers and would like to own such a unit. But, as I am a slow
builder, by the time, I would finish such a SA, I would be a
Methusalem at least. So I look for other options: Have you looked at
http://www.tti-test.com/psa/rf-spectrum-analyzer.htm and may be, do
you have practical experience with such a unit ?

Thank you for your advice and comments

Hello Werner,

I have looked at the on-line information on this and similar spectrum
analyzers. This one looks like it would be a wonderful instrument,
and the price looks like it is within reason for a new instrument.
That is, it is a lot of money, but the approximately 1200 Euros is
probably reasonable. I have no direct experience with this
instrument.

With this amount of money, I would be tempted to look for some second
hand instruments. A lot of good stuff shows up on EBay and I'm
sure that most is just as advertised. I have friends who have
obtained some great instruments through EBay.

Another thing to keep in mind is a software based spectrum analyzer.
Some of the digital oscilloscopes include a built in FFT routine that
will provide a readout. This is often quite useful. You can also
do wonderful things with a computer sound card, a mixer, and a signal
source. This is covered in EMRFD Chapter 7.

If you purchase a spectrum analyzer, you will miss out on the fun and
education that come with constructi

hello Wes,

thank you very much for your comments. I have also received a comment
from a german om DL7LA, which has worked with the unit: it is fine for
work in the field but less convenient for lab work.

For a similar amount of money there are indeed units on ebay for
instance a Anritsu MT8801B containing a spectrum analyzer. I will look
further into this ... Of course, having built a SA one self, trouble
shooting would be easier.

I have in fact built the block converter from EMRFD, also the power
meter and at the current time I am working on the 17m XCVR from
chapter 11. Your book looks pretty worn out here - it is really excellent.

Thanks and 73
