Dear All

I have a design for a high IP3 front end but this uses the MRF586
which is now difficult to obtain. Would a 2N3866 be a suitable
alternative or can anyone suggest a better (modern) device?

Ed,

BFW16A may be a good choice. It is often used as a "european
replacement" for 2N5109 in low distortion amplifiers for HF.

I have had excellent results in two different receiver designs using
the Analog Devices AD831. The data sheet shows an IP3 of +24 dBm with
-10 dBm LO drive. I have found an LO drive of -35 dBm to be optimum in
my designs, virtually eliminating birdies.
I don't have a lot of expensive test equipment to get numerical data,
but I A/B my receivers against my PRO III, switching the antenna
between the two. I find that all characteristics (to my ears) of any
signal are exactly the same between the two. If I can just barely
discern a signal on the PRO III, then I can just barely discern the
same signal
