Three piston trimmers marked MC603Y have been placed in the kit. One is measuring 25pf and the other 30.7pf. I know there is a way to adjust these things but I am having a hard time figuring it out. I placed the stud end in a vice with the top hat on the open side. No matter what I do to the top hat I can't change the capacitance. I have tried pushing, pulling it with long nose pliers and even twisting it but nothing seems to want to budge. Any advice here?

What is the advantage of these pistons versus plain old air type trimmers?

Please advise,
Vince N1VC

PS I also  realize there is now the SMT option but I already have the pistons (I think?)

Some piston trimmers have a cap that are removed, then you should get access to a screw slot to adjust the capacitance.
Be avare that piston trimmers are fragile, and don't take well to lots of heat when soldering and mechanical abuse when adjusting!

Guys, there is some good info ,on piston trimmer capacitors if you google the same , about the 4types of dileteric used and the different Q factors and such, maxgain systems has a lot of different types as well as surplus sales of Nebraska,  73's

I seem to recall Wes got the piston trimmer capacitors from Mouser, also recall they were rated at something like 1-11 pf cant recall where I seen this think it was in the bill of materials in the original QST article, can anyone confirm the part numbers and value, I re call Mouser had them in stock last I checked a couple years back.
