I just received word from Mouser that On-Semi is ending production of the three pin through hole FETS.  Digi-Key is showing the same.

December 31 st. is last day for quantity orders.  Mouser still has significant stock on hand.

SOT-23 surface mount devices are still being manufactured.

Thanks for the "heads-up" Bob.

For those wishing to stock-up, J310s are listed on ebay at a good price; 50x J310G Fairchild N-Channel JFET Transistor; J310 RF VHF/UHF Amplifier TO-92

(The "G" is a Pb-free package)

Futurlec also have them at a similar price; http://www.futurlec.com.au/test13.jsp?category=TRANSMOSFET-J&category_title=J%20Mosfet%20Transistors&main_menu=TRANSISTOR&sub_menu=TRANSMOSFET-J

The SOT-23 package should still be available; it's not so tiny that it can't be worked-on; if required it could be attached to a small "carrier" PCB (Futurlec has a range of those also).

I would urge all to take extreme caution when buying devices from any source except Tier 1 vendors such as Mouser or Digi-key.

If the price differential per device is only a few pennies, having ISO certification and traceability is worth every dollar.

PS -- I am willing to do a group buy and ship internationally, if there's enough demand.

I wish Digi-Key and Mouser could figure out how to get the
free packet shipping deal. Somehow the guy in China
can get something delivered to my door for a lot
less than from Minnesota.

I really cannot speak to the Chinese shipping model except to speculate that it is seriously subsidized by the Red Chinese state as a deliberate attack against the United States economy.

It's the result of a decades old postal treaty that makes internationally shipping of small packages cheap for everyone. The one difference is that the USPS does make the delivery confirmation for ePacket delivery free, but that's really only a couple cents option.

The reason why places like Mouser and Digi-Key have shipping so expensive is because they're not have the logisitcs in place for small lot, residential shipping. They're optimized to ship large quantities out to manufactures. They jack up the shipping and handling rates to compensate for the money they're losing picking out the handful of parts to ship to you.

I don't see how $8.00 CDN for overnight shipping to Canada is excessive.   That's is what Digikey charges.  And it's free if the order is more than $200.  What does Digikey charge in the U.S.

I just loaded up with 100 J310 from Mouser for $15.00

Dave:
For 8 oz, Digikey is quoting me the following:
USPS 1st class     $3.22
USPS Priority       $4.99
Fedex Ground      $14.16
UPS 3day              $19.32
Plus much more expensive faster service!
I order USPS Priority.  It usually arrives in 2 or 3 days and I can track it.

Thanks Dave,
Seems to me DIGIKEY has optimized shipping to North America.
Mouser is closer to $20

Last time I ordered from Digikey, shipping was still free with prepaid orders (at least to the US).  Takes about 5 or 6 business days (round trip from when I send the order).  Takes longer than that from China.  I try to order from Digikey - but often Mouser has what they don't.  I still order from China - but recent experience of folks on the groups reinforce that things like semiconductors aren't a good place to skimp.

If so, the Chinese government have certainly found a very easy way to greatly increase their exports.  Other countries might well learn from this simple way to support small business operators.  Nowadays, buying small quantities of small value items from the CONUS area, is far too expensive in shipping costs for the rest of the world to contemplate..

I have a suggestion. I suspect that nearly everyone in this group has a
dog-earred copy of EMRFD that they treasure. The authors practically
preach experimentation. Maybe the solution to the disappearance of
venerable semiconductors from our comparative youth is to experiment
with new components or new circuits that will produce the desired
outcome or improve on it rather than hoard the diminishing supply so
that we can keep doing it the same way into the foreseeable future.

Too radical?

Personally I am at a point where I am growing tired of chasing shrinking supplies of holy grail leaded components I can see with the naked eye ; and want to avoid sending us dollars to china.  The prices of good stereo microscopes are pretty low.

I am beginning to think about getting involved with smd at least for some things.   A lot to learn...

SOT-23 to TO-92 adapter boards are an option where a through hole package is
mandatory.

I have noticed for a while now that surface mount discretes have a much wider
selection of parts than the dwindling selection of TO-92 parts.

It's surprisingly easy with just a flourescent ring light with 6" magnifier, some tweezers, your ordinary soldering iron with a smaller tip and a cookie sheet with raised edges to work over so that you have everything handy and parts don't fly too far. If they do, most of the parts are literally a couple of pennies to replace. And as an added bonus, many of the semiconductors that are going obsolete are still available in smd packages. It's the packaging that is going obsolete in many cases.

I've been a ham for 57 years, so do the math and see that age isn't necessarily a barrier to working with smd, esp. in the larger sizes.

I do not know if On-Semi is the last big semiconductor manufacturer that was making them and is no longer, but I do know that they still seem to be available from Linear Systems, which specializes in low noise discretes and has some JFET products of their own which (they say) are better than what's available elsewhere.

Not as convenient as ordering from DK, but still available.

Hi Conard -

Boy, it's been a long time!! You've been keeping a low profile.... :-)

I just noticed you message below, your pc clock is off a few days, so it pops up 'way back when'...

I've been looking for a couple of 8393s for spares for my TEK 454. I can't afford much,
especially since the originals are still working fine.. :-)

What would you want for these, if still available. Anything you need I could trade??

Hope you're doing well, and just following other interests..

To the group -- if I were to make a bulk purchase of through-hole J310s for the group, what would be a fair price?  How many do you think you'd each want?  Remember that I'll incur some costs for the parts, and also for suitable packaging to get them to you.

I'd offer the price from Dan's Small Parts, but he's closed until New Year's.

Toss out some suggestions.  Mouser claims to have 34,000 of these right now, and the per-thousand price is USD$0.115 each.  One each is USD$0.54 each.

Thanks, Clint.

The kitsandparts site's per-each price is USD$0.33 in a small quantity.  That's a reasonable price point for me to sell at, although I'll sell by multiples of 10, probably at $3 for 10 pcs and probably $27 for 100 PCS.  Multiples of 10 make counting easier, and at some price point I'll ship free to US addresses.

What do others in the group think? Remember that I'll need to get a bunch of little anti-static bags to ship these, as well as suitable padded envelopes, so what looks like 13 cents net profit each ain't necessarily so.

Right now I am considering getting 1,000 pieces.  My lifetime needs may be 100 pieces.  How many do you want?  You'll still be able to "dead bug" or "Manhattan style" with the SMT parts, but your projects will take some re-engineering for that.  And through-hole parts are usually a lot easier to use for prototyping on older designs.

And when I do group purchases I almost never make any money in the long run ... I only wind up with cool stuff in my now-huge junk box.  And that means that my widow is gonna kill me.

10558 2014-12-09 13:08:37 Jim Strohm Re: TO-92 J310 FETS Now Obsolete
Dave,

That's a good price, they're the ON Semi part, and they're RoHS compliant.  Mouser can beat their best price but only if I buy 50,000 pieces or more.

More thoughts, folks?  I don't want to sit on thousands of these for 20 years if I get a bunch.  Dave's purchase suggests that a serious hobbyist might want these by the hundreds.  But if you can buy from Future at 9 cents each (minimum 150), why buy from me?
